How do I borrow library materials?

Bring your library card. You will need it to borrow materials or use an internet station. You will not be able to use your library card if you have fines of $10 or more.

How do I get a library card?

Apply for a library card at any Hawaii State Public Library branch.

New card

The first card is free for Hawaii residents and for military personnel (with military identification) and their dependents. Adult applicants must present a current ID and proof of mailing address if it is not listed on the ID. Minors (under 18) must have their applications co-signed by a parent or guardian. The parent or guardian must present a current ID and proof of mailing address.

There are two non-resident cards. The $25 non-resident card is valid for 5 years. The $10 non-resident card is valid for 3 months.

Replacement card

The card replacement fee for both residents and non-residents is $5. Resident library cards must be renewed every 5 years. There is no charge for the renewal.

If your card is lost or stolen, please report it to a library staff member immediately. A block will be placed on your file so that no one else can use your card.
